The word itself means purification, and it is one of the five pillars of Islam, meaning it is obligatory upon all Muslims. There are countless blessings in store for one who – ignoring his worldly desires for wealth – gives charity from a portion of his hard-earned money. This act increases him in modesty and selflessness. Meaning that not only does the system of charity benefit the nation monetarily, but the hearts of the people also become cleansed.
